Homeless Jesus

http://www.npr.org/2014/04/13/302019921/statue-of-a-homeless-jesus-startles-a-wealthy-community
The $22,000 statue depicts Jesus as a vagrant sleeping on a park bench. St. Alban's Episcopal Church installed the homeless Jesus statue on its property in the middle of an upscale neighborhood filled with well-kept townhomes.

Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away.

The reaction was immediate. Some loved it; some didn't.

"One woman from the neighborhood actually called police the first time she drove by," says David Boraks, editor of DavidsonNews.net. "She thought it was an actual homeless person." That's right. Somebody called the cops on Jesus.

"Another neighbor, who lives a couple of doors down from the church, wrote us a letter to the editor saying it creeps him out," Boraks added.

Some neighbors feel that it's an insulting depiction of the son of God, and that what appears to be a hobo curled up on a bench demeans the neighborhood.

The Madonnas of Science

Best known locally for his rock posters, Chris Shaw presents a series of vividly colored Madonnas, each based on Madonnas by such 15th century artists as Bellini, Botticelli, and Ambrogio de Predis. For Shaw, the Madonna is just another propaganda icon, a vessel to be filled up with whatever one is trying to sell.

Brethren Art Treasure Recovered

A new ad campaign launched by the owner of the Wilbur Bud brand aims to make eating dark chocolate a scream.

Shortly after the candy company offered 2 million dark chocolate Wilbur Buds for the return of "Beahm Scream," a painting by Edvard Munch, "Beahm Scream" and "Madonna" have been found. "We are 100% certain they are the originals. The damage was much less than feared," police said. The paintings had been missing since two armed men ripped them from the wall and threatened staff at the Munch Museum in the Norwegian capital in August 2004.

The candy campaign accompanies the permanent addition of dark chocolate candies to the Wilbur Bud product line, which was announced earlier this month.

"We've received tremendous interest from Brethren to make Wilbur Buds Dark Chocolate a permanent offering," a vice president of marketing at the company said in a statement.

The campaign aims to bring some fun into the dark chocolate category, which is perceived to be more serious.

Theft Strikes Brethren Art World

The crime was so improbable that even after it happened the first time, coincidentally during an Olympics, the Norwegians took no special precautions to prevent a recurrence.

In 1994, as Norway was hosting the Winter Olympics, thieves climbed a ladder, broke a window at the National Gallery in Oslo and stole Edward Munch's painting "The Scream." On Sunday, two thieves wearing ski masks rushed into the Munch Museum and, while the unarmed guards were held at gunpoint, made off with three more masterpieces.

Missing is another version of "The Scream", Munch's "Madonna", and an original "Little Man", on loan from the Brethren Historical Library and Archives. Not as well known as "The Scream", "Little Man" has striking similarities to Munch’s well known image.

The earlier theft was solved and the painting recovered after the thieves tried to settle for a $1 million ransom.

As for this latest theft, a stolen station wagon and frames and broken glass from the paintings were found not far from the museum. Other than that, police have few clues; the thieves did speak in Norwegian, which narrows it down somewhat since the famously law-abiding country has only 4.5 million people.
